Wintec has appointed two Pasifika leaders to grow participation and equity for Pasifika learners. Colin Tuaa has joined Wintec as Pasifika Lead – Strategy and Engagement and he will work closely with Rose Marsters as Pasifika Lead – Learner Success to create a strategy for Pasifika learners.

Hamilton’s first dedicated gluten-free bakery to open
Bliss Bakery, Hamilton’s only 100% gluten-free bakery, is opening a pop-up store at Queenwood Village in Chartwell on Friday 2nd October. Bliss Bakery’s products have previously been available online for click and delivery, or at the Tamahere Market, but their three month pop-up store will give customers, and gluten-conscious locals, a chance to experience their products like never before.

Working to end racial oppression supported by $10m MBIE grant
Researchers at the University of Waikato are leading a project that will investigate racial oppression across society. Dr Waikaremoana Waitoki, Dr Arama Rata and Professor Francis Collins say that racism is a social structure that underpins forms of interpersonal and institutional discrimination, which has detrimental effects on 21st Century Aotearoa New Zealand.

Reflections on the National Accounts, by Blair Keenan, Te Waka Economic Advisor
The size of the Covid-shock to the Aotearoa-New Zealand economy became a little clearer today, with the release of the national accounts for the June 2020 quarter. This showed gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 12.2 percent (seasonally adjusted) from the March 2020 quarter, and was 12.4 percent lower than the June 2019 quarter. This is by far the largest quarterly fall recorded in this country, and reflects the lockdown under Alert level 4 which began at the end of March.

$12.5m project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions using ‘digital twin’ technology
University of Waikato School of Engineering Professor Michael Walmsley will lead a seven-year research programme to reduce energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to $12.5m in funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. The researchers will build a new technology platform called Ahuora to help reengineer the way we use, convert, supply and store renewable energy for industrial process heating.

Why micro-credentials are good news for lenders and car buyers
Wintec has developed a series of micro-credentials to formally recognise skills and encourage best practice for personal lending, particularly within the automotive industry. The new micro-credentials (short courses) were created in partnership with automotive and personal lending industry partners, to provide an industry-specific qualifications framework.

A survey of 589 Waikato business owners and managers has found that while overall economic sentiment is pessimistic, the region’s businesses are more optimistic than their counterparts across New Zealand.
