Hamiltonian wins national environmental award

Local Hamiltonian Anita Goodman has won the Tidy Kiwi award for exceptional efforts in waste reduction, recycling and keeping Hamilton tidy.

The Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards were held last Friday and recognised individuals and communities across New Zealand working towards creating a more sustainable, bright future for Kiwis.

Among reducing roadside waste and composting, Goodman also takes it upon herself to clear litter from the gutters on her morning bicycle commute to work, and has cleared over 1800 aluminum cans in the 105 commutes she has made to her work.

Goodman said the award was unexpected, but she appreciated the recognition for her efforts to keep Hamilton beautiful.

“There are some really good people doing a lot of good stuff around the country. I was definitely surprised.

“I hope to use it as a platform to get people caring and stop littering in our streets.”

Goodman was among three finalists for the award, and says she hopes the award will go towards increasing awareness for recycling and how New Zealanders treat rubbish in their cities.

“I've been quietly picking up rubbish in the background over the past five years, but it's good to finally have a platform for it.

“A clean city is a happier city, and I really just want a nice happy city for everyone to live in.”

Goodman said a culture shift was necessary to change how Hamiltonians approached things like littering and caring for their community.

“I have had some pretty weird sideways looks from people for picking up rubbish, but people will stop and ask what I’m doing.

“Most people have a moment of realisation that this is cool and maybe they could be doing the same thing.“
